Schools in the Spotlight 2015
New Albany High School presented an ACT 30+ Club t-shirt to Rider Red on Tuesday, March 24 for his recent success on the ACT. Students who have a composite or subscore of 30 or more on their recent ACT are inducted into the club. Eighty-four students have become members of the ACT 30+ Club since its creation in the fall of 2009.

New Albany Middle School student Callie Robbins won the NMMC Hospice t-shirt design contest. Melissa Tate’s Algebra I class from New Albany Middle School enjoyed a field trip to Ole Miss on Thursday, April 16. Students were given a detailed tour of the National Center of Physical Acoustics and were impressed with the facilities and how math and science were used. The class toured campus and enjoyed lunch at the Union. Students also went on a double decker tour of Oxford and visited many historical sites.
Students in the New Albany Elementary School 21st Century After School Enrichment class visited BNA Bank on Monday, March 23. Students had a guided tour of the bank, learned about loans, and learned how to open a savings account.
Hilton Richey, Agency Manager, recently donated $500 on behalf of Farm Bureau Insurance Company to the New Albany FFA for the purpose of purchasing new FFA jackets. NAHS School Nurse Jill Robbins (far right) watches as seniors Mary Kate Thompson (left) and Victoria Brown (center) practice hands-only CPR. In March, Nurse Robbins presented a training program to seniors regarding CPR and use of an AED. This training program was used to fulfill requirements of House Bill 432 which says that students should have instruction regarding CPR and AEDs within their physical education course. School nurses will provide this training annually.
New Albany Middle School enjoyed a Faculty/Student Basketball game on April 2 and raised $571.50 for Relay for Life!

The New Albany High School Tennis Team beat Pontotoc Saturday, May 3, to become the North Half champion. They go next to the state finals in Jackson.

NAHS science students had an opportunity to participate in a live video conference with a professor and scientist from the University of Kansas. Dr. Forrest is an anti-cancer drug researcher who is trying to develop a drug to cure throat & mouth cancers. He currently has a dog-cancer drug in clinical trials and it is showing great promise, actually curing this type of cancer in dogs. His hope is to one day adapt it into a drug for humans that can be just as successful. He knows the latest techniques & methods using nanotechnology & the human genome to develop drugs that can battle cancer. Dr. Forrest, professor & scientist, who has established his own drug development company and works out of the University of Kansas, spoke with students in a skype session on April 23 and provided time for questions and answers.

Members of the New Albany Symphony League met Wednesday, July 15th, to plan its work with the North Mississippi Symphony Orchestra to implement the Carnegie Foundation’s “Link Up” program for first through six grade students in New Albany Public Schools. The Link Up program gives elementary school students a special music education program, the climax of which is a performance at the end of the school year in which participating students play instruments and sing with the North Mississippi Orchestra. Students from New Albany and Union County public schools were able “shop” for a career during Career Night, Tuesday evening. Students and their families could visit with people who are successful in several different businesses, tradecrafts and professions. The event was at the Vocational Center on the New Albany High School campus. Culinary arts was among the many career paths students could learn about just be visiting the right room. Earlier in the evening, Senior Parent Night presented information to help seniors prepare for college and their future.
“Chicks in the Classroom”
First grade students in Jamie Glenn’s classroom at New Albany Elementary School have been learning about animal life cycles by watching chickens incubate and hatch. Students have enjoyed participating in reading, writing, and science activities with this project.

Students in the Construction II program at the New Albany School of Career & Technical Education have recently been studying foundations. As an extension of this study, the students are creating model floor projects. Rick Robbins is the instructor for the Construction program.
WTVA Weatherman Joel Young spoke to PreK students at New Albany Elementary School. Young discussed weather and the seasons. PreK students have been recently learning about community helpers.
New Albany School District and Union County School District students recently received iTunes gift cards from the New Albany Career & Technical Center. The students were awarded these through a drawing for their attendance at College & Career Night. College & Career Night is an annual event hosted by the Career and Technical Center to inform students of job opportunities and college options in our area. Union County Circuit Clerk Phyllis Stanford visited students at NASTUC on Friday, October 16. She spoke about her job responsibilities as circuit clerk and voting rights. She described in detail about voting procedures, including how to use a voting machine.

New Albany Elementary School recently held a food drive. Students surpassed the food drive goal of 2,000 items. Donated items will go to the Good Samaritan Center, as well as other organizations in our community. Pictured: Fourth and fifth grade EXCEL students sort food from the food drive.

The New Albany School District is promoting perfect attendance during the months of October and November. New Albany Elementary School encouraged good attendance during the month of November with a drawing. For each week in the month of November that a student had perfect attendance, their name was placed in a drawing for a Samsung Galaxy tablet. November Perfect Attendance winners at NAES are: Erica Cannon from Ginger Henry’s class and Alan Romero from Lori Henson’s class.
