John L. “Bumper Jack” Foy, 84

June 23, 1939 – October 13, 2023

John L. “Bumper Jack” Foy, a beloved member of the Sherman community passed away on October 13, 2023, at the Oxford Veterans Home in Oxford, MS. He was born on June 23, 1939, to the late Willie Roosevelt Foy and Jimmie Lee Cannon Foy. Mr. Foy leaves behind a legacy of love, service, and family that will be cherished for generations.



John, affectionately known as “Bumper Jack,” was a man of extraordinary character and unwavering dedication proudly served his country during the Vietnam War, demonstrating his unwavering commitment to the principles of honor, duty, and sacrifice. His service in the U.S. Army was a testament to his dedication to the betterment of his country and fellow citizens.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Viola Foy, and his children, Christy Grice of Sherman, Lene Blair of Fulton, Jennifer Finney (Ken) of Nettleton, Laketa Gregory (Delvin) of Saltillo, Kimberly Farr of Saltillo, Ollie Earl Foy of Baldwyn, John Gordon of Fulton, Lee Foy (Tina) of Pontotoc, and his sister Dorothy Richardson of Red Hill. John was also a cherished grandfather to 30 grandchildren and a host of great-grandchildren. In addition to his immediate family, he is survived by his former wife, Annie Foy, who shared many years of memories with him.

John was preceded in death by his parents, his son William Bruce Kohleim, his great-grandchild N’aila Gregory, his brothers Jim Foy, Walter Foy, Bobby Foy, and David Foy, and his sister Melba Cunningham.

A man of many talents, John was a dedicated member of the Ivanho 494 Mason Lodge. He was a skilled mechanic and a former deacon at Sherman Grove Missionary Baptist Church, where he not only served in the choir but also extended his love by providing snacks to the church’s children during his active years. His commitment to his community was further demonstrated through his service as a former alderman in Sherman. John also spent years on the road, driving 18-wheelers and contributing to the transportation industry.

Funeral services to celebrate the life of John L. “Bumper Jack” Foy will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 21, 2023, at Sherman Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Sherman, Mississippi. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m. on the day of the funeral, prior to the service. Interment will be in the Corinth National Cemetery. His memory will forever be etched in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing him. John’s legacy of service, faith, and love will continue to inspire all who were touched by his presence.
