John Richard Portis, 70, departed this life unexpectedly January 16, 2025, at his residence in New Albany, MS.
A Funeral Service for Mr. John will be at 2 PM Thursday, January 23 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church with a graveside to follow at 4 PM.
Born February 15, 1954, in St. Louis, Missouri, Mr. John was the son of the late Robert T. and Alma Wiehmiller Portis. A 1972 graduate of W. P. Daniel High School, Mr. John proudly served his country in the United States Navy. During his time of service, he was enlisted as an airman who served on the USS Saratoga aircraft carrier, and ranked as ABE 2, receiving honorable characterization of service from the Bureau of Naval Personal (BUPERS), recognizing his duties being performed well and meeting the required standards. Once discharged form his duties, Mr. John returned home and was a truck driver with Martin and Averitt Regional Trucking, until his retirement.
A member at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, Mr. John was a man of strong will, who held fast to his beliefs and never shied away from voicing his opinion. A history lover, favorite pastimes of his included visiting and learning about different historical landmarks, swimming, and being outdoors, while hunting and shooting guns. He posed an old soul, and loved listening to the blues, and classic country, especially anything by Johnny Cash. During these days of goodbyes, family and friends find comfort knowing Mr. John is at peace and hold close to the memories made with such a wonderful man.
Memories will continue to be shared by two daughters, Anne Portis Acy of Grenada, Regena Portis of New Albany, MS, and a grandson, Wade Acy.
In addition to his parents, Mr. John is also preceded in death by three sisters, Julie Portis, Carol Portis and Tracy Holmes and his brother, Bobby Portis.
