Leland Hurt, 78
December 27, 1947 – July 29, 2026
Leland Irvin Hurt Jr., passed away on July 29, 2026, in Tupelo, Mississippi, at the age of 78. He was born on December 27, 1947, in Union County, Mississippi, and lived a life marked by faith, devotion, and a deep love for the people around him. Leland was a Christian man who worshiped his Lord and Savior throughout his life, and his faith was reflected in the way he treated others with kindness, patience, and care. Those who knew him will remember him as loving, kind, and thoughtful, a man whose presence brought comfort and warmth to family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Leland was a registered nurse and devoted much of his working life to serving others through several doctor offices in many locations. His work was more than a profession to him, as he carried into it the same compassion and steady spirit that defined his life outside of work. He was also deeply involved in church life and served as the minister of music for several churches, using his gifts to glorify God and bless congregations through song. Music was one of the great joys of his life, and he shared that love generously with others.
He loved music of all kinds, and his heart was especially loyal when it came to his favorite team, the Atlanta Braves. He was also a devoted Mississippi State fan and followed them with enthusiasm and pride. Above all else, Leland was a family-oriented man who loved his family beyond measure. His love for them was constant, sincere, and evident in every part of his life. He treasured time spent with those closest to him and found joy in the bonds that connected generations of his family.
Leland is survived by Deborah and Doc Chism, whom he considered his brother and sister, as well as Heather Rhea and Kevin Chism (Jamie) and their children, Dalton Chism, Colt Rhea, and Gabe Rhea, whom he loved as his own children. He is also survived by Shirley Chism (Cotton), Barbara Harrison (Wayne), Lisa Reed, and many more cousins whom he adored and treasured. He is preceded in death by his parents, Leland Hurt Sr. and Melba Reed Hurt, and cousin Jimmy Reed. His family will forever hold close the memory of his gentle spirit, his faithful heart, and the love he so freely gave.
Services to honor his life will be on Saturday, August 1, 2026 at 5:00pm at United Funeral Service. Visitation will be held before the service from 3:00 until the start of the service. Pallbearers will be Kevin Chism, Coty Chism, Jason Ralph, Hunter Harrison, Dalton Chism, Colt Rhea, and Gabe Rhea.
