Mary Helen Harris Hale, 99

Mrs. Mary Helen (Harris) Hale, age 99, of Raleigh, North Carolina, passed away on March 30, 2024. She was born on November 7, 1924, in Guntown, Mississippi. Mrs. Hale, also known as “Grandmama” to her family, was described as “one in a million” – a loving, compassionate, and welcoming individual whose demeanor never wavered. Her unwavering faith in God carried her through life’s trials, making her one of the strongest people on earth.



Mrs. Hale had a successful career as an Executive Housekeeper at Baptist Hospital in New Albany, Mississippi, for 25 years, preceded by 4 years at North Mississippi Medical Hospital in Tupelo, Mississippi. She was a dedicated member of Ingomar Baptist Church in New Albany, Mississippi, where she worshipped.

In her free time, Mrs. Hale enjoyed traveling, crocheting, engaging in church activities, and volunteering. She touched the lives of many with her kindness and generosity.

She is survived by her son, Robert (Bobby) Lewellen, daughter-in-law Amelia Lewellen, daughter-in-law Lisa Cobb Hale Maxey (Scott), granddaughter Terri Lewellen Robinson (Steve), grandson John Lewellen (Kim), granddaughter Ashley Hale Rhoads (Brian), grandson Matt Hale (Lauren), granddaughter Molly Hale Huey (Nathan), niece Connie Robison,
12 great-grandchildren: John (Caroline) Robinson; Desiree Robinson, Katherine Robinson, Kellan Robinson Borror (Andrew), Jack Lewellen, Simon Lewellen; Mary Helen Rhoads, Madi Jo Rhoads, Lucy Rhoads; Andi Hale, Woods Hale; Jamie Huey; 3 great-great-grandchildren: Reta Robinson, Lucy Robinson; Regent Borror. Great niece, Debbie Taylor; Great nephews, Brian Robinson and Bart Meeks.

Mrs. Hale was preceded in death by her father, Clovis G. Harris, mother, Ida Lorraine O’Shields Harris, brother William G. Harris, son Robert (Robby) Hale, husband Francis E. Lewellen; husband Ralph E. Hale, and niece, Billie Baines Meeks (Harvey).

A visitation and service will be held on Monday, April 8, 2024, at Ingomar Baptist Church in New Albany, Mississippi. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m., followed by the service at 11:00 a.m. Interment will take place in Ingomar Cemetery following the service.
