Mary Irene Tolbert Hereford, 94

November 23, 1931 – August 27, 2026

Mary Irene Tolbert Hereford, affectionately known as Rene was born November 23, 1931 to Merous and Clemmie (Cobb) Tolbert. She attended grade school at Cedar Grove. She professed her faith in Christ at an early age and joined Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church, where she was honored as the church’s senior member. Rene faithfully served her church through the Usher Board and Kitchen Ministry. Her faith was an important part of her life, and she remained a cherished and devoted member of the Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church family until she departed her earthly life.

Rene was united in holy matrimony to the late Robert E. Hereford. She dedicated more than 25 years of service to the Tupelo Public School District before retiring in 1993. Her commitment to her work and community reflected the same dedication and strength that she carried throughout her life.

She cherished her independence and was never afraid to make her voice heard. She found joy in the simple pleasures of life: cooking, expressing her sense of style through fashion, shopping, and spending time socializing with family and friends. Rene especially enjoyed being chauffeured around by her son, Larry, making memories along the way.

Always on the go, Rene lived life on her own terms. She was known for her quick wit and uncanny sense of humor, which brought laughter and warmth to those fortunate enough to have known her. Her feisty personality, independent spirit, and love for her family and friends will be deeply missed and forever cherished.

Rene’s memory will forever be cherished by three sons, Robert E. Hereford Jr. (James Ann), Carl Hereford (Ida Bee), and Larry Hereford; one daughter, Dianne Grady (Larry); daughter-in-law, Alice Fay Hereford; 13 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, 20 great-great grandchildren, two special caregivers: her granddaughter, Cheniquea “Nell” Harris and great-granddaughter, Kierra Dilworth, who provided her with loving care and companionship, and a host of relatives and friends, all who were blessed to know and love her.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her son, Walter Hereford, six brothers, and five sisters.
