Peggie and her grandson, Casper perished in a fire near McCullough Blvd in Lee County on Jan. 6, 2024. The two were inseparable, were seldom without each other’s support, and enjoyed thoroughly their lives together. Peggie, age 68, was born on June 19, 1955 to the late Herman Gray and Willa Jean Brookman Gray, both deceased. She lived all her life in this area, was a housewife and homemaker and a doting grandmother to Casper. She enjoyed cooking, baking and decorating cakes, everything and anything Elvis, reading, butterflies, and the color yellow. Peggie loved to travel and see the country. Casper was happiest when he was spending time with his grandmother. Born Feb. 22, 1998, to Cary Burch and Susan Norris Newcomb, he attended Dorsey Schools and doted on his grandmother, Peggie. He was a quiet young man who loved his family. They were members of Palestine Baptist Church north of Nettleton.

Peggie is survived by her daughters, Penny Estes and husband, Jimmy D. Estes of the Evergreen community in Lee County, and Susan Newcomb of Fulton; a sister, Deborah “Debbie” Martin of the Carolina Community; and a grandson, Dr. William Howard Kessler, IV of Tupelo. Casper is survived by his mother, Susan Newcomb of Fulton, his aunts, Penny and Debbie and a cousin, William. Peggie was preceded in death by her parents, Herman and Willa Jean Gray and her grandson, Casper.
