On June 19, 2023, the UNION COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS met for their second monthly meeting. Mr. Tanner Newman, candidate for Public Service Commissioner, was introduced and spoke to the Board of Supervisors. Tanner Newman is a Republican candidate running for Public Service Commissioner in Mississippi. He has a background in public service and has graduated from various institutions, including Itawamba Community College and the University of North Alabama. He has worked as a former Constituent Liaison for U.S. Senate and Director of Development Services for the City of Tupelo. Tanner Newman is seeking support for the upcoming Mississippi State Primary in August 2023 and promises to protect the North Mississippi tradition by offering real solutions that keep MS moving forward.

The board addressed several key matters. These included granting the County Administrator approval to adjust the Debt Service Budget for the Toyota Bond, renewing the School Resource Officer Agreement with Union County School District, and approving an inventory deletion for the Board of Supervisor’s old phone. The Chancery Clerk was also granted approval for the County Budget Comparison Report from May 2023.

The Circuit Clerk received approval for various employment and payment-related matters, including full-time employment for a Deputy Clerk, payment for services as Registrar, and payments for Election Commissioners. The board also approved Medical Examiner Fees for the Coroners office. Additionally, EMA/E-911 asked for approval to amend the EMA Budget with $86,000 provided by Homeland Security Grant Funding, which was granted by the board.

The Road Department gained approval for part-time employment for Isaac Treadaway and Drew Godin, effective June 19, 2023. The Sheriff was also granted approval for George Adams as Deputy, effective on the same date. An inventory deletion of an Apple Air iPad was approved. The Tax Assessor/Collector discussed and received approval for an increase in an Industrial Exemption based on a state-required update. The board also approved a request for a 30-day extension for the Union County 2023 Real/Personal Property Tax Roll and approved Petitions to Decrease Assessment and Notices of Increase to Assessment.

The Union County Board of Supervisors’ monthly meeting will be held on Monday, July 3, 2023, despite the upcoming Fourth of July holiday.
