Heavy rains with high winds, hail, flooding and possible tornadoes are headed into the Union County, northeast Mississippi area.

Severe thunderstorms now entering the New Albany area are expected to contain very heavy rain, hail, high winds, and the possibility of tornadoes across the interior South through tonight as a potent cold front is forecast to sweep across from west to east.

The low pressure system itself is forecast to intensify, expand and track toward the northeast for the next couple of days, with moderate to heavy rainfall engulfing much of the eastern U.S. by Thursday.

This Afternoon
Showers and possibly a thunderstorm. Some of the storms could produce heavy rain. High near 69. Southeast wind around 15 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.
Tonight
Showers and thunderstorms likely before 9pm, then showers and possibly a thunderstorm between 9pm and midnight, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms after midnight. Some of the storms could produce heavy rain. Low around 54. Southeast wind around 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.
Thursday
Showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm. Cloudy, then gradually becoming mostly sunny, with a high near 66. Breezy, with a southwest wind 15 to 20 mph becoming west northwest in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 35 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.
FLOOD WARNING IN EFFECT UNTIL FRIDAY AFTERNOON

  • WHERE…Little Tallahatchie Canal at Etta.
  • WHEN…Until Friday afternoon.
  • IMPACTS…At 26.0 feet, County Road 47 near Mud Creek and Mill Creek has 6 to 12 inches of water over it. Several thousand acres of cropland are flooded.
  • ADDITIONAL DETAILS… – At 12:00 PM CDT Wednesday the stage was 24.3 feet. – Forecast…The river is expected to rise above flood stage this afternoon to a crest of 27.0 feet early tomorrow afternoon.
