Shirley Evonne Gunter Green, 85

February 5, 1938 – January 27, 2024

Shirley Evonne Gunter Green won this earthly battle and started celebrating with Christ on January 27, 2024, just nine days shy of her 86th birthday.



Funeral Services honoring the well lived life of Shirley will be 1 PM Tuesday January 30, 2024, in the Heritage Chapel of the Ripley Funeral Home with Bro. Rick Cisowski officiating. Visitation will be 11 AM until Service Time at Ripley Funeral Home on Tuesday. Burial will follow in Oakland Baptist Church Cemetery in the Three Forks Community.

Shirley was born to Rube and Pauline Gunter on February 5, 1938, in a little cabin in Golden, MS. While in high school, Shirley met the love of her life, the late James Green, and they were married on September 3, 1956. They built the life they loved in Walnut, MS and raised 4 daughters. They were married for almost 42 years before losing James to Lou Gehrig’s disease in 1998. Shirley was a member of Mt. Hebron Baptist Church where she loved to volunteer for VBS. She also spent many years volunteering at the Good Samaritan Center in Walnut, MS, until her health diminished.

Shirley leaves behind two brothers; Sherman (Judy) Gunter, Angola, Indiana, Roy (Debbie) Gunter of Atoka, TN and a brother-in-law, Johnny Dunehew, Houston, Texas. Shirley was a loving mother to Barbara (Keith) Long of Walnut, MS, Belinda Wagoner of Selmer, TN, Jamie (Brad) Hill of Ripley, MS, and the late Laurie Caviness of Walnut, MS. Shirley was grandmother to: Eric (Celia) Palmer, Walnut, MS, Justin (Heather) Palmer, Nashville, TN, Josh (Mandy) Waldrop, Ripley, MS, Ethan (Beth) Waldrop, Walnut, MS, Daniel (Lauren) Hopper, Jackson, TN, Jacob Hopper, Bethel Springs, TN, Zak (Carly) Hill, Commerce, GA, and Sarah (Andrew) Hill, Walnut, MS. Shirley was a great-grandmother to: Tyler (Olivia) Palmer, Matt (Gina) Palmer, Camden Palmer, Daisy Waldrop, JJ Waldrop, Bethany Waldrop, Lexi Waldrop, Brentley Waldrop, Coleigh Waldrop, Madison Hopper, and a baby girl, Brynn Whitten Hill, due in February. She has also been blessed with 3 great-great-grandchildren: Zayne, Beck & Layton Palmer along with several nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Laurie Caviness, sons-in-laws; Joe David Caviness and Joe Wagoner, and her sister, Ruby Dunehew.

Our Mom leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories. She will be forever remembered as a devoted mother, grandmother, sister, and friend and will be deeply missed.
