New Albany, MS, September 2020: New Albany Main Street Association is excited to announce their new monthly event, SHOP the BLOCK for CHARITY. The series will begin Friday, September 25th with specials from 5-8 pm at participating Main Street partner retailers and restaurants, tents in the street, and live music at Cooper Park.

“We want to encourage shoppers and diners to get out and spend a Friday evening in historic downtown by creating a festive atmosphere”, said Billye Jean Stroud, Main Street director. “It’s Tallahatchie Riverfest weekend and we will have something for everyone.”

Main Street staff and partners met last month to discuss plans for the year-long endeavor. SHOP the BLOCK for CHARITY is scheduled to take place every last Friday of the month. Each shopping event will have a theme and donate a portion of sales from each participating Main Street partner to a charity that serves the New Albany community in some way.

Since this month’s event falls on Tallahatchie Riverfest weekend, the theme is “Community Fun”. In addition to SHOP the BLOCK, there will be the second annual Friends & Family Play All Day and a free outdoor movie at the Park Along the River green space. Play All Day wristbands can be purchased with a credit card online at newalbanymainstreet.com/online-store, at the Main Street office, or at the event for $10 each. Wristbands are good for Friday evening and all day Saturday (11am-10pm).

The charity Main Street has chosen for September’s SHOP the BLOCK is Sanctuary Hospice. Tracy Vainisi, Stroud’s assistant, noted, “Several of our Main Street partners were scheduled to have booths at Celebration Village which is Sanctuary Hospice’s big fundraiser. When they told Billye Jean and I that the event was cancelled due to covid related issues, we all agreed that we should do something to help.”

New Albany Main Street, its investors and partners encourage everyone to come out to shop, dine, and stroll historic downtown to SHOP the BLOCK for CHARITY and enjoy time with friends and family. Hand sanitizing stations, masks, and social distancing reminders will be placed throughout the event.
