Sue Wilemon Abernathy, 74

February 12, 1949 – November 28, 2023

TUPELO – Sue Wilemon Abernathy, 74, transformed to eternal life from her East Tupelo home on Tuesday, November 28, 2023, after an extended illness. Born in Tupelo on Feb. 12, 1949, as the 3rd child of 4 children of the late G.L. Wilemon, Sr. and Mildred Spencer Wilemon, Sue attended Lawhon School and graduated in 1968 from Tupelo High School. On Nov. 10, 1974, Sue married Sidney Abernathy in the living room at the Wilemon family homestead. To this union was born three children, Brad, Sydney and Jason. Sue had a working career that began at Southern Belle Telephone Company where she was a longtime operator eventually retiring several decades later as a Supervisor for AT&T. Sue enjoyed being a lifelong resident of East Tupelo and being a helpmate to many elderly and needy people in that area. She was a passionate animal lover and took in countless numbers of pets who needed a good home.



A service celebrating her life will be held at 10 AM Saturday, December 9, 2023, in the Sadie M. Holland Memorial Chapel at Holland Funeral Directors in Tupelo. A private family burial will take place at Shannon Cemetery. Visitation will be 30 minutes before the service. For those unable to attend, the service will be livestreamed at 10 AM on Saturday at hollandfuneraldirectors.com/live-streaming, where it will be archived. Sue is survived by her husband, Sidney “Sid” Abernathy; her children, Brad Abernathy (Jenny), Sydney Abernathy, and Jason Abernathy (Alyssa), and two grandchildren, Jase and JD; her only surviving sibling, JoAnn Wilemon Westmoreland; several nieces, nephews and a host of cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents; and two siblings, Eugenia Wilemon Bethay, and GL Wilemon, Jr.
