Tupelo post office to be named to honor Vietnam War POW, Colonel Carlyle “Smitty” Harris.
U.S. Congressman Trent Kelly (R-Miss.) will host a ceremony naming the Tupelo Post Office after Colonel Carlyle “Smitty” Harris. Col. Harris is a Vietnam War veteran who was held prisoner for eight years after his F-105 was shot down over North Vietnam on April 4, 1965.
While imprisoned, Harris taught other prisoners Tap Code – an old long unused World War II method of communication through tapping on a common water pipe.
