Union County Board of Supervisors, September 6
Board of Supervisors September 6: The first September meeting of the Union County Board of Supervisors was delayed until Tuesday morning, September 6th, because of the Monday holiday.
The board did routine business and heard a request from a local apartment complex that its assessed value be reduced.
The supervisors:
–Approved the minutes of their August meetings.
–Paid the bills.
–Approved a work schedule for road workers.
–Approved rates for solid waste disposal, and
–Authorized the hiring of a new part-time employee for justice court.
The board authorized architect William Mills to seek a grant from the Mississippi Department of Archives and History to be used for restoration of the interior of the county courthouse, which was built in 1909.
The board heard a request from the 144-unit Park Place apartment complex on Bratton Road that its assessed value for tax purposes be reduced. The Union County Tax Assessor assigned a value of nearly $10-million. Park Place representatives argued that the complex should be valued at no more than $6,480,000. Park Place claims that valuation either from a income-based appraisal or from comparison with similar properties supports the lower figure. They argue that ad valorem taxes on the apartment complex should be approximately $125,000, not the $196,789 the complex paid in 2015.
The county board took the request for reduced appraised value under advisement and scheduled an additional meeting on Thursday, Sept. 8, to consider the Park Place assessed value problem.
