Union County Schools prepare to present “Tarzan” musical
Rehearsals for the musical comedy “Tarzan” were underway Thursday afternoon in New Albany, and involved students from all four campuses of the Union County Public School District.
The two-act musical, based on the 1924 novel by American writer Edgar Rice Burroughs, will be performed October 2, 3 and 4 at the Cine Theater in downtown New Albany.
Students, parents, faculty members and volunteers from all parts of Union County work on the Union County schools’ theatrical productions.
The music and lyrics for Tarzan were written by Phil Collins, the Englishman who has won seven Grammy Awards and two Golden Glove Awards and who was both the lead singer and the drummer for 34 years, 1976 – 2010, for the rock band Genesis.
Previously a Disney Studios movie, the stage version of “Tarzan” opened on Broadway May 10, 2006, and ran for 486 performances at the Richard Rogers Theater.
Students from the four Union County campuses — East Union, Ingomar, Myrtle and West Union — produced their first ever musical comedy, “Oklahoma,” in the spring of 2009. Union County Schools Superintendent Ken Basil took office in January 2008, and said establishing a theater program was one of his priorities.
Students, whether they participate as actors, stage managers, ticket sellers or otherwise, must maintain good grades to be eligible to participate in the drama program.
