Vermont capital underwater after torrential rains

Parts of the state of Vermont are experiencing “historic and catastrophic” flooding according to Gov. Phil Scott after two months’ worth of rain fell in two days. Streets have become rivers in the historic district of Vermont’s capital Montpelier, which is low-lying and surrounded by hills. Floodwaters in the downtown area have reached window height and city managers have urged the city’s 8000 people to be ready to move to an upper story.

Even though the rain has stopped for now, dams in the surrounding area are at capacity, so the danger hasn’t passed. Gov. Scott urged people in affected areas to maintain caution over the coming days. Around the state, at least 117 people have already needed to be rescued from rising waters. “We are not out of the woods,” he said. “This is nowhere near over”.

In the last year, more than 1.2% of Americans (or about 2.6 million people) have been displaced by a natural disaster.

Grand jury in GA for possible 2020 case against Trump

District Attorney Fani Willis in Fulton County, Georgia, is empaneling a grand jury to weigh the possibility of charges against Donald Trump and others related to the 2020 election. Earlier this year, a special grand jury (which only had the power to recommend charges but not to issue indictments) produced a report with findings from a months-long investigation. That panel recommended that charges be brought against unnamed persons.

During the probe, the jury interviewed numerous people in Trump’s circle, including his attorney and former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani and Sen. Lindsey Graham (R- S.C.) about efforts to overturn Trump’s 2020 election loss in Georgia. However, that panel did not interview Trump himself.

The new grand jury will have the power to issue indictments based on the findings of the previous special grand jury.
