Supervisors approve emergency Courthouse air handler, allocate quarterly budget funds & more

The Union County Board of Supervisors held a meeting on October 16, 2023, to discuss various matters. During the recent Union County Board of Supervisors meeting, important decisions were made regarding the County Administrator’s agenda.

An emergency purchase was approved to replace the Air Handler on the south side of the Courthouse. Additionally, the board allocated a quarter of the budget for the 2023-2024 fiscal year, with specific amounts assigned to the Tax Assessor/Collector ($201,030.00), Sheriff’s Department ($779,401.00), and Union County Jail ($366,376.00).

The County Engineer has been granted approval for engineering services related to the Martintown Industrial Park Grant Project. In other news, the Circuit Clerk has received routine approval for payments to Election Commissioners, services as Registrar, Grand Jury, and Circuit Clerk Association Dues. Circuit Clerk Phyllis Stanford presented a $500 check to the Union County Sheriff’s office as part of the Circuit Clerk Association’s annual donation, which is randomly awarded to 10 different sheriff departments each year.

The Coroner’s office received approval for Medical Examiner Fees (8), while the Emergency Management Agency (EMA) discussed quotes for a gooseneck trailer and obtained approval for its purchase. The Maintenance Buildings and Grounds Department was granted approval for the inventory deletion of a Stihl 025 Chainsaw, and the Road Department received approval for transmission repair to a John Deere 5090 Tractor, in compliance with MS Code Section 19-13-21.

The Sheriff’s Department recently obtained several approvals from the  board. John Morgan Boater was granted approval hiring as a full-time Deputy, while Jason Collier was approved hiring as a part-time Deputy. Additionally, the Sheriff’s Capital Outlay Budget was amended to include $8,212.00 from insurance proceeds. The board also discussed quotes for purchasing two new Dodge Durangos 2023 models and approved the lowest bid from Canon Motors at $39,000.00. Furthermore, the Sheriff explored options for purchasing four used patrol vehicles using funds from the Seized Assets Fund, which were approved along with a manual check for the vehicles and travel/lodging for four deputies to pick them up.

The Tax Department received approval for the Surrendered Tag List for August. Additionally, the local government board discussed and successfully implemented a Burn Ban for Union County due to the prevailing dry conditions.

The board adjourned, with the next session scheduled for Monday, November 6, 2023.
