Tupelo formerly of Whidbey Island, Washington – Elaine Kerndt passed away on Saturday, April 25, 2026 at the age of 59. She was born to John Kerndt and Diane Sheppard on November 8, 1966. She was a beloved mother, grandmother, daughter, and sister. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her, and fondly remembered for the smile she always carried.
Elaine found peace in the beauty of nature, often camping wherever she could pitch her tent. While enjoying the outdoors, she found relaxation in crocheting and cooking. She had a love for music and enjoyed playing the flute, and she was always mindful of bringing happiness to those around her.
A woman of deep faith, Elaine found great joy in praising her Savior, Jesus Christ. She faithfully served as a member of the choir at West Jackson Street Baptist Church, where her voice and spirit were a blessing to many. She loved her family dearly and cherished the friendships she built with those at the library.
She is survived by her mother, Diane L. Sheppard; children, Ashley Garrison (Justin), and Jon Kevin Smith; grandchildren, Emmitt Garrison, and Elijah Garrison; brother, Dave Kerndt (Melinda); and the father of her children, Dewey Smith.
She was preceded in death by her father, John Leslie Kerndt.
Visitation will be from 3 p.m. until service time Tuesday, April 28, 2026, at Pegues, Saltillo.
A memorial service honoring the life of Ms. Elaine will be at 5 p.m. Tuesday, April 28, 2026, at the Saltillo Chapel of Pegues Funeral Directors with Dr. Keith Cochran and Bro. Matthew Pharr officiating.
