New Albany will not have a Freedom Fest due to the coronavirus, but will have a couple of activities the week before July 4.

Community Development Director Billye Jean Stroud said that a fireworks show will be held about 9:30 p.m. Saturday, June 27.

The event is early because July 4 itself falls on the following Saturday when many are likely to have other plans.

The display will be on the bank of the Tallahatchie River in Tallahatchie Trails where it is usually done for park festivals.

Stroud said the display should be visible anywhere around the downtown area and most people can watch it from the safety of their vehicles if they choose.

Early that Saturday morning, Pedaling for Hope will be held on the Tanglefoot Trail.

The annual event, postponed from earlier this year, is a bike ride to raise funds for the New Albany Main Street Association and for the Regional Rehab Center in Tupelo. The rehab center has provided a variety of rehabilitative services to Union Countians at no cost to them for many years.

The Pedaling for Hope entrance fee is $35. Participants will receive T-shirts and box lunches.

The only other festival-type event scheduled at this point is the Tallahatchie RiverFest Sept. 26. For now, Stroud said, plans are for the RiverFest to go on as planned.
