Yancie “Peggy” Turner, 92

September 3, 1931  –  February 16, 2024

SHERMAN – With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Yancie Lou (Peggy) Turner, of Sherman MS, our loving and devoted mother and friend to many whose lives she touched, on February 16, 2024 at the Sanctuary Hospice House in Tupelo, MS surrounded by her family. She was in her 92nd year. She was born September 3, 1931, in Memphis, TN to Burnel Henderson Wade and Yancie Lou Parker Wade. She was married for 68 years to Jerrell Wayne Turner who preceded her in death on Oct. 19, 2019. In her early adult life, she worked at Southern Bell Telephone Co. for some years. Later she was the first face who greeted you when you walked into the Kellum Clinic in Tupelo, MS where she worked for some 30 years until their closing, following which she worked at the NMMC Clinic in Baldwyn until she retired in 1994.

She was the much-loved mother of five children, Jerry (Roscoe) Turner (deceased), Phyllis Hopson of Tupelo, Beth Turner of New Harmony, Tony (Betsy) Turner of Saltillo, and Angie May (Thomas) of Tupelo. She was the grandmother of Christopher Hopson (Ashley), Seth Hollis (deceased), Jakob Hollis, Landon Smith, Mary Beth Leathers, Parker Kate May, and Asher May, and two step-grandchildren, Noah Roberts, and J.C Roberts. She has four great-grandchildren and one step great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Wayne Turner; her son, Jerry Turner; her father, Burnel Wade, and her mother, Yancie Wade; her brothers, John Wade and Burnel Wade; her sister, Cleta Vinson; and a grandson, Seth Hollis.

Our mother had a quiet, somewhat reserved personality, which we felt was much the opposite of our Dad’s as he never met a stranger. She was a very strong woman, a determined and hard-working lady, who in her younger years never sat still, constantly cooking for her family, cleaning house, or working in the yard. She loved yard work as evidenced by her “Yard of the Month” award. When she became less active in a wheelchair, she enjoyed sitting with family on her back porch, weather permitting, watching many different species of birds that gathered at the feeders she placed around her yard. She also was an avid reader. She loved her cat, Sydney, which, as her memory faded, she called “my little doggie.” Most of her daily exercise came from chasing poor Sydney around the house in her wheelchairwanting to hold her. Until her health made it impossible to attend, she was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Tupelo, MS. She dearly loved the ladies of her Faithful Followers Sunday school class. Most of all, she loved her family and instilled in us strong Christian values that have served us well. She will be dearly missed and forever in our hearts.

A special thanks to Martha Thompson, caregiver and friend, who went above and beyond in her care of our mother.

A celebration of our mother’s life will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2024 in the Sadie Holland Memorial Chapel at Holland Funeral Directors in Tupelo.
